Not all hypnosis involves putting you into a zombie sleep state as Hollywood have you believe! In fact, most hypnosis is performed while you're eyes are wide open! You're hypnotized by TV ads, or captivated by a thought while driving, or simple lost in thought reading this blog! A test of this is when someone comes in and startles you! Essentially popping you out of that hypnotic state!
As humans, we move from one entrancement to another. It is how we learn. Our mind, according to Hypnotic Theory, establishes it's own representation of the world from what our senses feed it. As we develop, we form what we perceive to be, a clearer model of the world around us. We receive what is known in Hypnosis parlance as "Message Units" from our senses and they are fed to the conscious mind. Our conscious mind feeds these message units to our conscious filter, which is responsible for filtering out unnecessary information to our subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind stores all information 24/7-365 from the first day of life to the last.
The hypnotic state occurs when our conscious filter becomes overloaded with message units! The more our conscious filter becomes overloaded, the deeper we move into hypnosis. So, one could say that you're actually becoming hyper-aware of your surroundings rather than less aware of your surrounding under hypnosis. Fainting is a form of hypnosis! A person becomes too overloaded with information and the conscious filter moves out of the way to allow the primal mind, and the subconscious to take over completely. This is a survival state for humans whereby we can either fight or flee a situation. It's not unusual for a person who's fainted to suddenly get up and run away!
Now, the way that I like to empower my clients, is to provide them with customized hypnotic exercises to reinforce their desired goals. Facilitate them into a resting hypnotic trance. Use the same customized hypnotic exercises that the client will use for themselves while in a resting hypnotic trance. And then, have the client practice the customized hypnotic exercise with me while awake and alert. The reason why I approach hypnotherapy this way, is simply to empower the client, and not have them develop an over dependence on me. I want my clients to be in total control of themselves at all times!
And, the reason that I provide a uniquely customized hypnotic exercises is because, not everyone can be hypnotized the same way. Each person relates to the world uniquely and therefore requires unique hypnotic exercises.
